If you’ve been digging into Google Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report for more than a quarter, you already know the frustration: a sea of “poor” or “needs improvement” URLs for Largest Contentful Paint, yet the lighthouse scores in your staging environment look pristine. The gap between lab data and field data is real, and it’s often a server-side issue hiding in plain sight.
Using Entity Salience and SERP Feature Mapping to Find Competitor Content Gaps
Competitor content gap analysis has moved well beyond keyword lists. Modern search engines evaluate entities, intent, passage relevance, and information gain. If you only compare keyword coverage, you will miss gaps in semantic completeness, format, and trust signals. The more useful question is this: what does the ranking cohort collectively understand that your site does not, and where can you add something the entire cohort lacks?
Start with a narrow topic cluster rather than a broad niche. Pull the top ten to twenty ranking URLs for head and mid-tail queries in that cluster. Do not analyze one competitor in isolation. Aggregate the cohort. Crawl their sitemaps, headings, schema markup, and internal links. Use an NLP library or API to extract entities, concepts, named entities, and recurring questions. Build a matrix with entities as rows and competitor URLs as columns. Cells should indicate mention, salience, and depth. True gaps appear as rows where your content has zeros and the competitor cohort has consistent coverage. White space appears where almost no one covers an entity that demand signals say matters.
Entity coverage alone is table stakes. Examine passage-level treatment. Search engines often rank pages because one section answers a specific subquery. Extract H2 and H3 headings plus paragraph chunks from competitors. Embed them and cluster by meaning. If five competitors explain how to audit log files but only two mention log retention and privacy, that is a gap. If none cover the transition from legacy logs to structured logging, you have found a white space. Validate demand with People Also Ask, autocomplete, forums, support tickets, and sales calls. The goal is not to stuff every entity into one page. The goal is to identify the missing passages that can rank independently.
SERP feature mapping is the next layer. Record which features appear for each query: featured snippets, people also ask, video carousels, image packs, local packs, shopping units, and top stories. Each feature implies a format. If competitors rank with long-form articles but no video, and the SERP shows a video carousel, that is a format gap. If every competitor uses a static comparison table but none offers an interactive calculator, build the calculator. When PAA questions repeat across related queries, treat them as entity attributes. Answer them in concise, extractable passages and support them with structured data where it makes sense.
Analyze structure and internal linking as part of the gap. Competitors with strong clusters often use hub pages that link to detailed spokes. Their gap might be a missing spoke that supports a commercial hub. Use a crawler to map their internal link graph. Find orphaned topics, outdated pages, and thin pages with high link equity. That reveals opportunities to create better consolidated assets. Inspect update cadence too. A competitor with high authority but stale content creates a freshness gap. If they lack author bios, citations, original data, or methodology, that is an experience and expertise gap. You can win with transparent sourcing, expert quotes, original screenshots, and reproducible tests.
Quantify each gap without overtrusting exact volume. Use relative demand signals: keyword tool ranges, Google Trends, PAA frequency, Reddit upvotes, YouTube comments, and Search Console queries where you already get impressions but low click-through rate. Score by business value, not just traffic. A gap that answers a pre-purchase objection may convert better than a high-volume informational term. Consider difficulty realistically. If the SERP is dominated by brands with deep link profiles, target a more specific sub-intent or a different format. If competitors all have generic content, a data-driven original study can attract links and citations.
Turn findings into briefs. Each brief should specify the primary entity, supporting entities, questions to answer, passage-level headings, required format, internal links, schema, and unique information gain. Use AI to accelerate extraction and clustering, but keep human editing for accuracy and nuance. Publish, interlink, and monitor. Track entity coverage, impressions for gap queries, passage rankings, and assisted conversions. Re-run the analysis quarterly because SERPs and competitor content move faster than most teams assume.
The real advantage is not copying what competitors do. It is understanding the collective blind spots of the ranking cohort. When you map entities, passages, formats, trust signals, and link structures, content gaps become a roadmap. Fill the gaps that matter to search engines and buyers, and you move from reacting to keywords to shaping the topic.
