Another diagnostic move that separates intermediate practitioners from the crowd involves looking at the query’s click position rather than the average position. The Click Position metric in GSC is a weighted average of where Google actually served your listing when a user clicked. If the average position is 4.1 but the click position is 5.8, that tells you users are clicking on a lower-than-average placement of your listing. That suggests your snippet title or description is failing the relevance test compared to competitors who are ranking above you. In this case, the issue is not cannibalization but poor messaging alignment with search intent. A simple A/B test with your meta description and title tag update can shift that click position downward, improving overall CTR.

The highest-leverage action you can take with GSC performance data is to stop looking at isolated metrics and start looking at the delta between expected and actual behavior. If a query has a decent position but terrible CTR, resist the temptation to blame the algorithm. The algorithm is showing you that your page has earned the visibility but fails to compel the click. That is a content marketing problem, not a ranking problem.
